11/20/2020: Department Chairs Meeting

General Education Revision 2021-2022 Presentation

12/2020: Town Hall Invitation & Presentation

Dear Colleagues,

UNC Charlotte will be undertaking a redesign of General Education over the next two years and a taskforce to undertake that redesign will be appointed in January. All faculty should have a voice in this process as you are the ones who design and implement department and university curricula. As you can imagine, this is a significant undertaking and it is very important to get faculty input from the outset and throughout the process.

To that end, the group that is developing the charge for the General Education Redesign Taskforce is holding two town hall meetings to hear from you. The group is interested in your thoughts on the following questions:

  • Why is a Gen Ed revision important? What do we want our students to be able to do when they graduate?
  • What is working well in current Gen Ed?
  • What needs to be changed in Gen Ed given changes to students, society, and employment?
  • How should faculty (and other stakeholders) be involved in planning, delivering, and evaluating the General Education curriculum?

There will also be an opportunity to gather your thoughts on any practical considerations (e.g. staffing, advising, transfer) that need to be incorporated into the Gen Ed Taskforce’s charge.

Attendance at these town halls is open to all faculty, but we do ask you to register. Please click on the link below for the session that works best for your schedule; fill out your details and you’ll receive the Zoom link that you can then add to your calendar.

  • Thursday, December 10, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Friday, December 11, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Thank you all for your contributions to this endeavor at these town halls and going forward. If you cannot attend either town hall, feel free to contact Joanne Maguire with any comments, questions, or concerns.

Sincerely,

Joan Lorden

09/14/2021: Task Force Makes Phase 1 Recommendations

Dear Faculty,

The General Education Task Force has made its Phase 1 Recommendations and is scheduling two open Town Hall meetings next week to get your feedback:

  • Thursday, September 23, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
  • Friday, September 24, 10:10-11:40 a.m.

Your participation in town hall meetings last year informed the Phase 1 recommendations the Task Force has developed, and these upcoming town hall meetings will provide critical input as it launches Phase II of the General Education Redesign process beginning in October.

I encourage you to take this opportunity to provide feedback to help shape this important discussion. Attendance at the town halls is open to all faculty, but we do ask you to REGISTER. Registrants will receive a calendar invite with Zoom link next week.

If you have any questions or concerns, please send them to the Chair of the Task Force, David Johnson (djohns1@uncc.edu), or to your task force representative at General Education Redesign.

Thank you all for your contributions to this Gen Ed revision at these town halls and going forward.

Sincerely,

Joan F. Lorden
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

02/03/2022: Task Force Update – Town Halls Scheduled

Dear Faculty,

The General Education Task Force would like to share its current proposal for the revised 2023 General Education curriculum. The Task Force has scheduled two Town Hall meetings to get your feedback.

  • Thursday, February 17, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
  • Friday, February 18, 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Your participation in town hall meetings last fall served as the basis for continuing work by the Task Force and additional faculty who have served on satellite working groups. The upcoming town hall meetings will provide critical input as the Task Force finishes its work on the 2023 General Education curriculum this semester.

I encourage you to take this opportunity to provide feedback to help shape this important discussion. Attendance at the town halls is open to all faculty, and there will be an additional town hall scheduled for academic advisors. Please register to attend one of the Town Halls; registrants will receive a calendar invite with Zoom link the day before the session.

If you have any questions or concerns, please send them to the Chair of the Taskforce, David Johnson, or to your Gen Ed Revision Task Force representative.

Thank you for your contribution to the General Education Redesign.

Sincerely,
Joan F. Lorden
