The Common Reading Experience,
a joint initiative between Academic Affairs and Student
Affairs, engages first-year students in intellectual inquiry
that encourages students to explore personal, racial,
religious, and cultural issues. The program was introduced
in Fall 2007 in several Freshman Seminar classes, and is
expanding to include several liberal studies, composition
and discipline-based courses.
The Blue Sweater,
by Jacqueline Novogratz, has been selected as the Common
Reading for Fall 2010. The
Blue Sweater chronicles Novogratz’s experience leaving
the security of a promising career in finance to pursue her
own vision of building sustainable business partnerships
with people struggling to escape poverty in Rwanda.
Novogratz challenges readers to consider the ways our
actions, and inaction, impact people across the globe.
Details about the book are available
online.
Past Common Reading
Experience selections include The Color of Water by
James McBride, Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario,
and Listening is an Act of Love by Dave Isay. Each
fall UNC Charlotte has hosted the author of the book for a
campus visit and keynote lecture.
To support adoption
of the common reading across campus, the Common Reading
program will offer a workshop this May for instructors
interested in using this book in their classes and in
department programs. If you are
interested in using The Blue Sweater this fall, email
Liz Fitzgerald at

for more details about book adoption, review copies,
and the May 2010 workshop.
